Meet our newest board member: Matt Nessier

SKOS neighbor and board member Matt Nessier.

You may recognize our newest board member from our monthly volunteer days, where you often see him helping out in every way imaginable. So who is Matt Nessier? We’ll let him tell you in his own words.

I am excited to join the SKOS board to help continue the great work that the current and previous board members & volunteers have accomplished. My family has benefited from living near the space and enjoying it regularly in many ways and I look forward to being able to give back so that other Potrero residents can continue to enjoy this awesome space.

My kids are growing up on the space and love everything about it–participating in the work days and wildflower walks, playing on the swing and mostly running around enjoying wild space which is so important for our urban kids (and adults!). The highlight for my wife and me is the opportunity to connect with friends and neighbors at the annual SKOS Sunset Piano Block Party.

After living in San Francisco for more than 20 years and in Potrero Hill for more than 10 years, I am thrilled to be able to contribute to the protection and maintenance of this beautiful open space.

Matt takes over the remaining term of long-time board member Erika Kuempel, who recently moved out of San Francisco. Please join us in welcoming Matt to the SKOS board!

Meet neighbor and new board member Dovid Coplon

When Sutton Trout stepped down from the Starr King Open Space board due to his family moving away from San Francisco, the board turned to long-time SKOS supporter, volunteer, and Potrero Hill neighbor Dovid Coplon to fulfill his term.

So who is Dovid Coplon?

Meet new board member and neighbor: Dovid Coplon.

Dovid moved to Potrero Hill upon his return from a year and a half in Boston in 1997, just in time for the neighborhood’s metamorphosis from sleepy backwater to vibrant part of the City’s ever accelerating frenzy. One of his favorite quick escapes is to be able to find refuge in the Open Space which is visible from his deck. And as his daughters have grown, Dovid and his family enjoy the rope swing, Sunset Pianos, throwing a ball, wildflower walks, just being silly, or connect back to open space. A native of the Bay Area, Dovid’s parents’ one-time property on Skyline now makes up the core of the Russian Ridge Preserve.

Regretting the lack of parity between the pace of development and the addition of open space and parks on our side of the City, he is committed to helping preserve SKOS as a treasured resource for the neighborhood.

Dovid coordinates digital communications for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and also serves on the Board of the National Kidney Foundation of Northern California and the Pacific Northwest, a chapter that his father founded almost 50 years ago.

Dovid’s dream is to cover the 101 freeway with soccer fields and open space and reconnect the Potrero and Mission neighborhoods.

We’re excited to have Dovid on the board, please say “hi” if you see him with his family at the rope swing!

Your donations help protect our neighborhood

Dear Neighbors,

We had another amazing year at Starr King Open Space, here are some of the highlights:

Restoration of Coral Road loop (Photo: Erik Hansen)

Education, land stewardship, and community building are all priorities of this Board and we are proud of our accomplishments this year.

In 2018 we hope to kick-off completion of the removal of Coral Road and fill that area with native plantings. We are also working hard to continue maintenance of the large eucalyptus and foxtail abatement efforts to continue to keep the open space safe for families and visitors. With your financial support, we can make these projects happen.

Starr King Open Space and the 501(c)3 organization that manages it survive solely on donations and grants. With these funds, the Board is able to keep the Open Space safe, clean, and beautiful for everyone to enjoy.

Whether you walk your dog on Starr King Open Space, enjoy the sunsets, or just appreciate the value of wild open space, you understand we can’t afford to lose this neighborhood treasure.

Please do your part to help protect your Open Space and consider making a tax-deductible donation today. You can donate using PayPal or credit card or you can send a check to our PO box. Our SKOS Tax ID # is 942967564.

Thank you for your ongoing support.
